The North American premiere of Ceilidh (pronounced “KAY-lee”) at the M&T Bank Exchange in Baltimore is a rare theatrical gift. It’s one of those shows that sneaks up on you. On the surface, it bursts with the joy of dance and music, steeped in Scottish tradition, but underneath it is a warm-hearted story about love, family, legacy, and companionship. From its opening moments to its final bows, Ceilidh doesn’t just tell a story; it invites you to live it.

One of the most delightful aspects of this production is how immersive it is. At least six separate dance numbers involve audience participation, and believe me when I say how sweaty some of the Scottish jigs made me. The choreography, live music, and “callers” (those who guide the dance steps) make those moments feel spontaneous even if carefully scripted. And while I couldn’t always tell where the script ended and improvisation began, that ambiguity is part of the charm. It keeps you alive in the moment, watching and listening as though you’re at a real ceilidh, or a traditional Scottish social gathering involving dancing, music, and storytelling.

The team behind Ceilidh makes innovative use of the M&T Bank Exchange space, transforming it into something that feels more like a cozy village gathering. Three fully stocked bars line the edges of the room, reminiscent of a welcoming pub, while string lights trace the balconies and ceiling to cast a warm glow overhead. At intermission, we were even offered bites of traditional haggis and a sip of smooth Scotch, deepening the sense of cultural celebration.

I’ve seen many phenomenal productions at the Hippodrome, but Ceilidh! stands among my favorites so far. It’s joyous, emotionally unexpected, and deeply human. If you go, expect tons of laughter, maybe a tear or two, and absolutely expect to get on your feet (or at least tapping your foot along). The show runs through October 12th, and I’ll certainly be going back to enjoy another ceilidh. Will I see you on the dance floor?
