The Barns at Wolf Trap with its acoustic mastery and intimate setting is the perfect venue to host a society of musicians each renowned at their craft. So we welcome the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. This concert was being recorded live so hold your applause, and just be ready to enjoy the dark excitement of which is Chamber Music.
The selection of artist for this grouping of Chamber Music Society included Nicholas Canellakis on cello, Jeremy Donk on piano, Paul Neubauer on viola, Erin Keefe on violin, John Zirbel on horn, and Jose Franch-Ballester on clarinet. They played Brush, eight pieces for clarinet, viola, and piano, Op. 83 (1909), Brahms, trio on E-flat major for horn, violin, and piano, Op. 40 (1865) and Dohnanyi, sextet in C major for clarinet, horn, violin, viola, cello, and piano, Op. 37 (1935).
This concert maybe wasn’t their single greatest performance but it was still done well. Jeremy Donk played the piano precisely note for note. John Zirbel on horn sounded triumphantly splendid. Jose Franch-Ballester played the clarinet with joy and enthusiasm. Paul Neubauer played the viola effortlessly masterful. Nicholas Canellakis played the cello prominently protuberant. Erin Keefe played the violin with graceful resilience. It was a terrific performance I just didn’t feel they had perfect cohesion (although there were some prominent rests Erin Keefe nailed magnificently during the Brahms trio). It was a good just not by any means perfect. There were portions during Dohnanyi sextet in C major where the violin, viola, and cello had to pluck their strings for a stanza or two and I kept hearing this clicking (I’m sure it was picked up on the recording). It was from the bows hitting the music stands. I don’t think that was in the sheet music.
I would still recommend seeing Chamber Music Society just do your research prior. They have such a wide assortment of musicians, and guest artist that maybe the musicians you guess might be performing i.e. David Finckel and Wu Han aren’t playing that particular concert. So just check their calendar at www.chambermusicsociety.org to see which installment of Chamber Music Society is performing when they come to your town. If it’s Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center it’s excellent by any means and you should check them out.
