Tony-nominee Charl Brown brings Smokey & Me: A Celebration Of Smokey Robinson to the Weinberg Center for the Arts in Frederick, Maryland on Sunday, October 30, 2022 at 7:30 PM. An unforgettable performance celebrating the life, music, and career of the legendary Smokey Robinson.
Tickets start at $27 and may be purchased online at weinbergcenter.org , by calling the box office at 301-600-2828, or in person at 20 West Patrick Street.
As the story goes, Smokey Robinson, a founder of Motown and one of the producers of Motown: The Musical, went backstage on opening night to look for Charl Brown, the handsome young actor who portrayed him in the show. When he found Charl backstage, he came up to him, smiled and simply said, “Hello, Me!”. Grammy Living Legend Award, NARAS Lifetime Achievement Award, National Medal of Arts Award from the President of the U.S., induction into both the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters’ Hall of Fame are just some of the achievements Smokey Robinson has received in his lifetime; so it’s no surprise the exchange between Brown and Robinson was the catalyst for Smokey & Me.
The production is split into two acts, with act one celebrating Smokey’s story and many of his biggest hits (such as, “You’ve Really Got a Hold on Me”, “My Girl”, “Mickey’s Monkey”, and so many more), and act two exploring the storying of Charl Brown, the fortunate actor that performed the role of Smokey every night in Motown: The Musical – ending with a medley songs such as “Tears of a Clown” and “Being With You.” Fans of Smokey Robinson will simply love hearing these iconic records performed live and experience the journey that celebrates this Motown vocalist’s life and legacy.
