Strathmore’s Artist in Residence (AIR) continues its Spring season with jazz flutist and vocalist, Alex Hamburger, as she mixes her rich voice with the light and graceful sound of the flute, April 13 and 27 at AMP by Strathmore, in North Bethesda’s Pike and Rose. In addition to her performances, she will conduct a special workshop, Breathing & Body Awareness for Woodwind Players & Vocalists at Strathmore’s historic Mansion on April 20 at 7:30 p.m.

Born to an artistic family in Washington, DC, Alex Hamburger began studying classical flute at age seven and began finetuning her improvisation skills sitting in on her father’s gigs and being a part of Paul Carr’s Jazz Academy of Washington.

Her talents have taken her all over the world. From SUNY Purchase where she received formal training as a James Moody Scholar, she was off to Canada as a member of the Banff Jazz and Creative Music Program in 2017. The next year she was invited to Switzerland as part of the prestigious Focusyear band at the JazzCampus. This January, Alex’s quartet traveled to South America to play in Mercedes, Uruguay as a part of the annual Jazz a la Calle Festival and in São Paulo, Brazil at Jazz B.

In November 2021, Hamburger wrote and arranged the compositions included in her quartet debut album, “And She Spoke,” inspired by the works of female poets and composers.

Currently, Alex is preparing to record a new album with help from Chamber Music America’s 2021 Performance Plus Grant, a donor advised fund of the Boulder County Arts Alliance.

In addition to be a Strathmore Artist in Residence, she is a 2022 Wammie nominee.

Sponsored by Ellen and Michael Gold.

Strathmore graciously thanks our Artist in Residence Champions for their multi-year commitment and above-and-beyond support to the AIR program.
