GALita, a program of GALA for the entire family, is proud to present the world premiere of La llamada de Sylvia Méndez: Separate Is Never Equal by Cornelia Cody. Commissioned by GALA Hispanic Theatre and directed by Elena Velasco, this bilingual production will be presented at GALA Theatre, 3333 14th Street NW, Washington, DC 20010. Performances for general public are Saturdays, October 15 and 22, 2022 at 3 pm.

Sylvia Méndez was eight years old when she changed history. At that age, Sylvia and her family successfully challenged the segregation of students of Mexican descent in California schools. But at what cost? Witness history being made as you experience the joy of children’s games and song, feel the pain of losing a special friend, and meet the men and women who were integral to the fight for civil rights. From the schoolhouse to the courthouse, Sylvia was at the center of the struggle.

Student matinees of La llamada de Sylvia Méndez: Separate Is Never Equal are on weekdays at 10:30 am, October 11 – October 14 and October 17 – October 21, 2022. The duration of this show is approximately 55 minutes and is appropriate for the entire family. This production is supported by the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, the Dimick Foundation, and the Mayor’s Office on Latino Affairs.
