Metric teamed up with Stars and Broken Social Scene to deliver an unforgettable performance
at The Anthem last weekend. The Canadian indie-rock group kicked off the All the Feelings
Tour in June and have spent the summer traveling across the United States and Canada.
They’ve been on the road promoting their tenth studio album, Romanticize the Dive which they
released in April.
The All the Feelings Tour pays tribute to the music, artistry, and community that led to the
creation of the three bands on the lineup. Metric, Broken Social Scene and Stars all contain
members of the other groups. Metric frontwoman Emily Haines told the crowd the All the
Feelings Tour took years to come to fruition, and featured friendships “going back to when we
were kids.” Throughout each act, members from the other bands on the lineup joined the stage
for various songs, making the show feel like a family affair.
Stars kicked off the evening with a short, mellow set. The indie-pop group have released nine
albums over the course of two and a half decades, with their latest album released in 2022.
Their music originally featured elements of electro-pop, but has evolved to feature more
traditional rock elements. During their set, they played a range of songs across their
discography. Stars’ ended their performance with a political twist, calling for D.C. statehood.
Broken Social Scene echoed the political messaging of Stars’ set, telling the crowd that the
United States have been great neighbors to Canada despite the recent tensions. More of a
music collective rather than a traditional band, the group contains anywhere from six to nineteen
members, with musicians coming and going throughout the set. Introducing their childhood
friends in the horns section and bringing out various members from Stars and Metric, Broken
Social Scene’s set embodied joy and community. Near the end of their set, Emily Haines and
James Shaw of Metric joined them for “Anthems for a Seventeen Year-Old Girl”, one of their
most popular songs. They ended with a highly energetic finale showcasing the many talents of
the dozen or so band members onstage.
The energy of the first two acts was off the charts, and yet nothing compared to the energy that
Metric brought to The Anthem. Haines barely spent two seconds in one spot as she jumped and
danced around the stage. The show highlighted Metric’s nearly 30-year career, featuring songs
from their wide discography and anecdotes between several tracks. Haines told the crowd about
the ‘dehumanizing’ early days of touring, sharing that DC’s 9:30 Club was the first music venue
to treat the group like humans. Metric brought out members from Stars and Broken Social
Scene to join them for a handful of songs, before wrapping up with their hit song “Black Sheep.”
The energy and atmosphere Metric, Broken Social Scene, and Stars created on the All the
Feelings Tour was a highly unique experience only they could have pulled off. Nearly four hours
of music and dancing highlighted the friendship and art the musicians have created over the
decades. The All the Feelings Tour will continue through the rest of the summer, before picking
up in Europe this fall. The tour will conclude with a series of shows in Canada.
