This summer, the National Building Museum invites visitors of all ages to rediscover the joy of play with THE PLAYGROUND, a monumental new installation created in collaboration with New York-based design firm Snarkitecture. Open July 3 through August 30, 2026, THE PLAYGROUND transforms the Museum’s iconic Great Hall into an immersive environment designed for climbing, building, exploring, gathering, and imaginative play.
“Playgrounds are where so many of us first experience creativity, exploration, independence, and community,” said Aileen Fuchs, president and executive director of the National Building Museum. “As the nation prepares to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary, THE PLAYGROUND is a reminder of the important role public spaces play in bringing people together. We’re excited to transform the Great Hall into a place where visitors of all ages can gather, create, play, and experience the joy of connection throughout the summer.”
In addition to the installation, THE PLAYGROUND will feature a full summer season of public programs designed to bring people together through play, sport, creativity, and discovery. Throughout the summer, visitors can experience Late Nights featuring live music, food, and drinks; go behind the scenes during exclusive Hard Hat Tours; and participate in hands-on workshops inspired by play, creativity, movement, and design. Families can enjoy weekly Storytimes, Building Readers Club events, STEAM Saturdays, and drop-in artmaking activities that invite children and caregivers to learn and play together.
THE PLAYGROUND invites visitors to gather, explore, create, and connect throughout the summer through immersive experiences and public programs designed to spark creativity, movement, and intergenerational engagement.
