Crowds were excited to see Frozen the Hit Broadway Musical at The Kennedy Center earlier this week. Happy kids of all ages (including adults) were dressed in their finest attire for an elegant night at the theater. The highly anticipated musical will grace the stage from December 20, 2023 – January 21, 2024, so, one will have many opportunities to experience this dazzling event.
The curtain opens to see a young Elsa and Anna singing about building a snowman. For those unfamiliar with the story, Elsa has magic powers that can make snow and ice appear. The parents and Elsa try to keep the powers hidden to no avail. Once Elsa is grown and crowned queen, she is unable to control her powers. Anna then sets out on a perilous journey to save Elsa and the snow-covered town, meeting and making friends along the way.
The delightful ensemble sings in beautiful harmony while regaling us with fun and lively dances. The choreography includes a fun maypole dance, a beautiful dance where the cast becomes ocean waves carrying the parents out to sea, and hilarious dances barely covered in towels or bushes at the Oaken family sauna. But, the most stunning of these dances was when the ensemble appears all dressed in white, and breathtakingly merges together waving and lunging like drifting snow. A projection then beams on them to portray Anna turn to ice. Once melted, the ensemble lifts her to the arms of her adoring sister, Elsa.

Lauren Nicole Chapman, who plays Anna, is delightful. Her adorable facial expressions and line delivery is hilarious. Her performance is amplified by her lovely singing voice. When combined with the beautiful singing of Caroline Bowman, who plays Elsa, the harmonies are stunning. Other notable hilarious characters are Evan Duff, who plays the Duke of Weselton, Jack Brewer, who plays Oaken, Dominic Dorset, who plays Kristoff, and Jeremy Davis, who plays the fan favorite, Olaf.
The Olaf character was so much fun to watch. The actor stood behind the snowman puppet dressed in a white snow like costume, with his shoes attached to Olaf’s feet to make this character come to life. Another fun to watch character was Sven, played by Collin Baja. He really brought the furry adorable reindeer to life. Other costumes were brightly beautiful and fun.
The sets were also amazing. The beautiful castle set transformed into an icy wonderland. Snow blew in as Elsa pointed each direction, and projections of snow danced and swirled around. The crystal ice palace was beautiful, and one was mesmerized by Elsa’s costume change, which happened in the blink of an eye.
I would rate this show an “A”. In typical Disney fashion, Frozen is magical, family friendly, and beautifully done all around. This show should definitely be on the “must see” list for all.
