Primitive World’s new EP “Purple Caps” is unlike any techno EP you will ever hear, and for good reason. “Purple Caps” is a combination of music and sound effects, including bells, whistles, chimes and a variety of sounds. Sounds a little unusual, doesn’t it? Let’s take a moment to listen to the tracks on “Purple Caps” and talk about what makes this EP so unique.

Starting out the EP is the first and title track “Purple Caps”. This is definitely an unusual track. “Purple Caps” is more about sound effects than music, although the sounds of a tambourine and slight percussion can be heard in the intro. “Azimuth” starts out with mostly sound effects, but those effects combined create a colorful musical sound. I can dig “Q Type”. The percussion in the background, as well as the whirring sounds and high-pitched scream make this song unique.

“Tides of Lust” starts out with an opening high hat and rhythmic handclaps and cymbals. Each one is played in perfect time and would be perfect to listen to in a club setting. Last but not least is “Purple Caps (Not Waving Remix)”. In contrast to “Purple Caps”, the remix is more about music than sound effects. Much like the earlier tracks, this song is a percussion-filled track that is fun to listen to, but you may find it quite difficult to dance to.

The plus side about this EP is that it’s unique and the sound effects create their own brand of music. The sound effects in each song prove that you don’t need traditional instruments to create music that the audience will enjoy. Although this is truly innovative, it’s also a little difficult to get into. “Purple Caps” is meant to be a techno EP, which generally includes upbeat and pulsating music. There may be a few psychedelic sounds here and there. Unfortunately, it was more about sound effects than music.

“Purple Caps” is an interesting EP, but it isn’t for everyone. While techno is a danceable genre, this particular EP doesn’t fall into that category. The only two songs that are easy to dance to are the remix to “Purple Caps” and “Q Type”. I can appreciate creativity, but this might be a bit much.

I love to write and have been doing so since the age of eight. Fictional stories have always been a favorite of mine, because it gives me a chance to be creative and to express myself in a multitude of ways. On more than one occasion, a song proved to be the inspiration to several stories I have written. Believe it or not, some of those songs were on soundtracks! That’s mostly what I listen to, aside from hits from the 1950’s up to the 1980’s. I’ve learned that anything can be the inspiration to a story, even a poster from the 1990’s or a DVD cover.

I’ve lived in Upper Marlboro all of my life and spent much of my childhood watching cartoons of all kinds, and listening to my older sister’s cassette tapes. Growing up, I listened to everything Jackson related, Paula Abdul, Elton John, and even the controversial group Milli Vanilli. As a teenager, I continued to listen to old-school hits and that was pretty much all I liked, aside from listening to all of Michael Jackson’s music. To this day, I still love old-school hits. That hasn’t changed.

I own a variety of CDs from artists such as Styx, The BeeGees, Michael Jackson, Queen, The Yellow Submarine Soundtrack, and many others. When a soundtrack comes out, there will always be one specific song from that album that I’ll love. It never fails.
