TV Revue: Grown-ish "Back & Forth"

Grown-ish “Back& Forth”

March 28, 2018 Derrick Dunn Television, Television Reviews

Grown-ish closes out its stellar freshmen season with the aptly titled “Back & Forth.”   At the closing of last week’s episode, Zoey (Yara Shahidi) found herself in a predicament when both Aaron (Trevor Jackson) & Luca (Luka Sabbat) confessed their feelings for our heroine. The love triangle gets worse when Cash (Da’Vinchi) returns, deciding that he wants Zoey back.

Grown-ish “Crew Love”

After nearly losing the friendships they established in last week’s episode, the characters are back to normal on Freeform’s Grown-ish. Episode 10 titled “Crew Love.”  The show has been successful tackling numerous rites of passages we all experience in college. “Crew Love” finds the crew getting ready for Freshman Formal.

TV Revue Grown-ish "Safe & Sound"

Grown-ish “Safe & Sound”

Episode 11 of the hit Freeform series, Grown-ish is titled “Safe & Sound.”  This episode centers around on who deserves a safe space on campus. Similar to last week’s episode, which saw two of the background characters taking the lead, “Safe & Sound” pushes Ana (Francia Raisa) to the forefront.

TV Revue: Grown-ish: "It's Hard Out Here For A Pimp"

Grown-ish “It’s Hard Out Here For A Pimp”

March 7, 2018 Derrick Dunn Television, Television Reviews

“It’s Hard Out Here for A Pimp” is episode 10 of Freeform Series Grown-ish. Episode 10 pushes Zoey to the background, after her voiceover introduction, speaking on dating stats for young black women in college.  The sharply written episode decides to focus on the Forester sisters Jazz and Sky (Chloe x Halle) instead. I found the episode to be refreshing as, throughout the season, the arc for the Foresters sisters has centered on their athletic scholarships.

TV Revue: Grown-ish: Who Gon Stop Me

Grown-ish: “Who Gon Stop Me”

March 1, 2018 Derrick Dunn Television, Television Reviews

“Who Gon Stop Me “is the ninth Episode of my new favorite series Grown-ish.  The episode opens up with the ever-likable Zoey (Yara Shahidi) relaxing in her room when she gets a phone call that’s a drug dealer, was shot on campus. Without hesitation, Cal U. goes on lockdown. Zoey, and her friends think that Vivek (Jordan Buhat) is the victim. It turns out, it was the school’s number one drug dealer, who was caught cheating on his girlfriend.

TV Revue: Grown-ish: "Un-break My Heart"

Zoey’s Intervention

February 8, 2018 Derrick Dunn Television, Television Reviews

After last week’s break up, Zoey (Yara Shahidi) is indeed a broken soul in Episode 7 of Grown-ish, “Un-break My Heart.”  A traumatic breakup your first time away from home can be the worst. Who hasn’t been in the dumps after a breakup:  eating junk food, watching romantic comedies, and thinking there will never be another love, like the one you lost?  Zoey’s friends, sick of seeing her in a funk, stage an intervention.  Zoey begins partying to work out her feelings.  When a power outage on campus forces her to stay in for the night, she must confront her true feelings to begin the healing process.

TV Revue: Grown-ish: "Cashin' Out"

Zoey Faces Tough Decision

February 2, 2018 Derrick Dunn Television, Television Reviews
Grown-ish Cashin Out

Episode six of my new favorite series Grown-ish, entitled “Cashin’ Out”, opens with the naturally charming  Zoey (c) raving about everything she loves—from Beyoncé’s Lemonade album to Kobe beef tacos.  With natural ease, Yara delivers this lovely monologue that anyone, who has been in love right out of high school, can relate to.

TV Revue: Grown-ish "Cash Rules Everything Around Me"

Grown-ish “Cash Rules Everything Around Me”

January 24, 2018 Derrick Dunn Television, Television Reviews

Freeform’s spinoff series Grown-ish, continues its stellar freshmen season with its fifth episode “Cash Rules Everything Around Me.” After getting his mojo at the end of last week’s episode, basketball Phenom Cash Mooney (Da’Vinici) is now dating Zoey (Yara Shahidi). Zoey seems to have forgotten about Cash’s special treatment he received during midterms in episode four and is moving towards a serious relationship with Cash.

Grown-ish “Starboy”

January 18, 2018 Derrick Dunn Television, Television Reviews

College sports are the dramatic backdrop of Episode 4 of Grown-ish titled “Starboy.” Starboy” opens with Zoey giving a voice over on how noteworthy millennials have archived goals before the age of twenty-five. Wanting to make her place in the world, and take out of the competition, Zoey makes a deal with Dean Parker to tutor a star basketball player, hoping to get a letter of recommendation, but her friends believe the relationship is something more. We were introduced to the basketball player last week, in a coda moment.

TV Revue: Grown-ish "If You're Reading This, It's Too Late"

Grown-ish “If You’re Reading This, It’s Too Late”

January 12, 2018 Derrick Dunn Television, Television Reviews

The core storytelling aspect of what makes a spin-off great for me is breaking itself from its parent show. Freeform’s Grown-ish continues this trend with Episode 3, “If You’re Reading This, It’s Too Late”. Since the backdoor pilot episode aired last season, Zoey has been trying to get Aaron (Trevor Jackson) to notice her.
