The fearlessly funny women of The Second City return to Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company with She the People: The Resistance Continues! – a freshly written show inspired by the femme-forward, all-funny blockbuster, and 2019 Helen Hayes Outstanding Visiting Production winner, She The People. Directed by Carly Heffernan, She the People: The Resistance Continues! will run from December 1, 2019 to January 5, 2020 with a special New Year’s Eve performance.

Since 2009, Woolly Mammoth has partnered with The Second City to bring their signature brand of laughter-fueled activism to Washington DC audiences, creating a “second” home for the Chicago-based comedy troupe. “It’s a no-brainer to bring back last year’s all-female, all-star team,” says Woolly Mammoth Artistic Director Maria Manuela Goyanes. “This is a dynamic experiment for Woolly and The Second City, to create innovative material and play with the continuity of beloved characters with this comedy troupe in a way unique to Woolly, DC, and the country.”

This brand-new play further satirizes the reality of being a woman in the United States, exploding the myths and misrepresentations surrounding body positivity, bachelorettes, Beyoncé, the 2020 ballot, and exploring the impact of the Trump presidency and the #MeToo, and Time’s Up movements. Of course, it wouldn’t be She the People without the reappearance of everyone’s favorite T-Rex. “Created by women, performed by everyone,” Director Carly Heffernan says, “The goal is to have the audience feel inspired,…hopeful for the future…and keep the message of empowerment and inspiration alive.”

The female-led ensemble includes Carisa Barreca, Alex Bellisle, Katie Caussin, DC local Kazi Jones, Sayjal Joshi, and Jo Scott. The production is directed by Carly Heffernan. Additional members of the production team include Meghan Raham (scenic design). Sarah Tundermann (light and projection design), Sarah O’ Halloran (sound design), Jessica Sheehan (costume design), Kirsten Bowen (dramaturg), and Lauren Pekel (production stage manager).
