Washington Performing Arts presents this 2014 Avery Fisher Career Grant-winning ensemble at the Kennedy Center Terrace Theater on February 28, 2016, at 2:00 PM.  The quartet performs Beethoven’s Quartet 14, Op.127, Janáček’s “Quartet No. 2 Intimate Letters and, Andrew Norman’s Sabina. A lifelong enthusiast for all things architectural, Norman writes music that is often inspired by patterns and textures he encounters in the visual world, a perfect complement for the artistically innovative Calder Quartet.

Inspired by innovative American artist Alexander Calder, the Calder Quartet’s desire to bring immediacy and context to the works they perform creates an artfully crafted musical experience. The quartet, called “outstanding” and “superb” by The New York Times, performs a broad range of repertoire at an exceptional level, always striving to channel and fulfill the composer’s vision. Already the choice of many leading composers to perform their works – including Christopher Rouse, Terry Riley, and Thomas Adès – the group’s distinctive approach is exemplified by a musical curiosity brought to everything they perform, whether it’s Beethoven, Mozart, Haydn, or sold-out rock shows with bands like The National or The Airborne Toxic Event.

Of a recent D.C. appearance, The Washington Post raved, “The Calder’s Beethoven was full of flaring drama, furrowed brows and quiet intensity. But, with the tightest of ensemble playing and well-judged balancing of instrumental voices, the piece retained its classical integrity and polished finish.”

Tickets: Start at $50, available at washingtonperformingarts.org or (202) 785-9727.
