Indie rock band Frog Eyes has returned with their sixth studio album Pickpocket’s Locket. Carey Mercer, formerly of the band Blue Pine, leads this Canadian band. The release of their singles Joe with the Jam and Two Girls have given their fans a taste of what Pickpocket’s Locket has to offer them and they are offering their very best.

We begin with the first track, Two Girls (One for Heaven and the other one for Rome). The rapidly beating of the drums, piano and sax give this track a jazzy sound. “Joe with the Jam” combines a carefully performed orchestra with elements of rock. The Beat Is Down (Four Wretched Singers Beyond Any World That You Have Ever Known) is a mix of country, blues and rock. Despite its dark title, Death’s Ship is upbeat and sunny, particularly with the strings and drums. The same is true for The Demon Runner. As with Death’s Ship, this track also has a dark title, but the melody is far from it. Although not as upbeat, it isn’t as dark as its title. The strings and steady drumbeat make it an easily enjoyable song. Considering both songs have such eerie titles, it’s surprising that their songs have a completely opposite sound.

The strings and piano make Rejoinders In a Storm sound like a romantic melody, or as the singer says, “the sweetest melody”. In a Hut has an angry sound. Carey sounds as if he is taking out his frustration and anger through the song. Crystal Blip has the sound of 1950’s rock mixed with modern day rock. I immediately thought of the movie Grease when I heard it. I Ain’t Around Much is a heartbreaking tune. It sounds as if it were based on actual experiences, which causes such strong emotion with Carey. At last, we get to Rip Down The Fences That Fence The Garden. This is a track that is beautifully played and the strings are perfectly timed with the vocals.

Pickpocket’s Locket is an album that is beautifully done. Combining indie rock with an orchestral performance is what made this album so colorful and attention grabbing. Frog Eyes’ unique sound is what keeps the fans coming back for more, and at the rate they’re going, they’ll gain more fans by the minute.
