While I may be inclined to go so far as to call the first season of TWD “good”, I would mind my tongue heaping any further collective praise. The most I could say regarding the first season is that it consistently demonstrated hints of brilliance at times. Regarding the second, I’d be hard-pressed to come up with anything nicer to say. The first half of season 2 was sluggish and meandering, presenting meager offerings in the way of logic, quality of writing and action. It had its share of fine moments—like Shane unraveling or… oh I guess that’s it. Nothing else that happened really had much resonating emphasis behind it, like Carl getting shot. He managed to survive a serious gunshot wound at the hands of Hershel, a veterinarian within the span of a few episodes. Otis, arguably the most interesting and noble character on the farm, offers to seek medical supplies and is struck down in cold blood at the hands of Shane. It’s a completely messed up scenario—yes, but very effective, and above all else, just good; a fantastic moment of tension in an otherwise dull season.
