A Corrosive Mix of Politics, Special Interests in Kings

2 min read

Kings

Created by Sarah Burgess
Directed by Marti Lyons
Runs December 12, 2018 – January 1, 2019

As the dust settles from midterm elections, with freshman members of Congress learning to navigate the maze of Capitol Hill 2.5 miles away, Studio Theatre presents its next Studio X production Kings written by Alexandria native Sarah Burgess and directed by Marti Lyons. With a deft hand at the fast talk and power dynamics of lawmaking and fundraising, Burgess’s swamp tour of Beltway powerbrokers that fuel her hometown. A Susan Smith Blackburn Prize finalist, Burgess quickly rose to notoriety exploring the cutthroat world of finance in her breakout play, Dry Power, at the Public Theater in New York, which starred Claire Danes, John Krasinski, and Hank Azaria.

“Sarah Burgess is an Alexandria native with a great sense of talk: How people do it and what people do with it,” says Studio Theatre Artistic Director David Muse. “In Kings, she dives deep into the weeds of DC politics with a razor-sharp comedy about lobbyists, lawmakers, and the destructive influence of money on power. We rarely do Beltway plays at Studio—the bar is set pretty high. But this one is a treat for politicos and outsiders alike.”

About Kings

Representative Sydney Millsap is a first-time Representative, arriving in DC armed with her ideals and sense of duty, and refuses to play by the rules of special interests—or her own party. Kate’s a lobbyist who backs winners. So, when she crosses paths with Representative Millsap, she dismisses her as a one-term neophyte…but ends up hearing a call to conscience she thought she’d left outside the Beltway. A lacerating comedy about money, power, and what democracy actually looks like by Alexandria native Sarah Burgess.
